Andrzej
Wajda is a directorial star in the firmament of film history
and stands as Poland’s foremost director. With a keen
eye for balance between intellect and emotions and always
provocative, Wajda has been a barometer of Poland’s
political and economic trajectory for the last 50 years.
He is one of the great storytellers and a most versatile
director who created romantic films, comedies and epics,
as well as dramas. This Limited Edition Collector’s
Box Set includes eight classic films by Andrzej Wajda:
Canal [Kanal]
In war-torn Warsaw during World War II, a group of Resistance
soldiers and patriots attempt to flee the grasp of the Nazis
by escaping into the city's maze of underground sewers.
(1957)
Ashes and Diamonds [Popiól
i diament] The adaptation of Jerzy Andrzejewski
classic novel comprises the third part of Wajda’s
World War II trilogy. “Will there remain among the
ashes a star-like diamond, the dawn of eternal victory?”
(1958)
Everything for Sale
[Wszystko na sprzedaz] Intensely
personal, Wajda created an homage to deceased Polish actor
Zbigniew Cybulski. A blurred line of fiction and reality
creates a playful quality, with many in the cast playing
themselves. (1969)
Landscape After Battle [Krajobraz
po bitwie] A German stalag is curiously
unchanged after its liberation by the American army revealing
the destructive effects of war on the human spirit. But
Tadeusz, a sensitive Pole, realizes that he can begin his
life over again. (1970)
Promised Land [Ziemia obiecana]
Three industrialists of different ethnic backgrounds join
forces to build a factory in Lodz, the heart of textile
industry, at the turn of the century but are quickly jeopardized
by local politics. (1974)
Man
of Marble [Czlowiek z marmuru] In Stalinist
Poland, a film student risks censure when she begins researching
the true story of a factory worker elevated to the status
of national hero--then erased from public record entirely.
(1976)
Young
Girls of Wilko [Panny z Wilka] A man returns
to the town where he spent many happy holidays in his youth
only to find that the past is gone. But he comes to realize
that he has had a considerable impact on the town and its
people. (1979)
Zemsta
[Revenge] Two bickering 17th century aristocratic
families are forced to share the same castle when their
family names no longer hold the weight of yesteryear. As
individual greed triggers a slew of new battles, romance
rears its mischievous head as well. (2002)
